A record like Motor! by The Ugly Beats remains a timeless treasure. That’s because the local quintet brings a fresh approach to something like classic ’60s pop/rock that simultaneously shows a deep appreciation of the sound by the band. They bring something more to it, something contemporary without just imitating their musical inspirations. And oh – by the way, they’re all damn good musicians.
Do not miss The Ugly Beats at their show tonight at Hotel Vegas, 1502 E. 6th St. We’re looking at a splendid show bill here: Psyched-up power-pop from The Ripe; high-octane rock ‘n’ roll from The Bad Lovers; and more rock from The Electric Friends to start out the evening. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended. Shake it.
