I, your humble Austin Music Minute maven, tend to gravitate toward shows in smaller spaces or unexpected places that serve quite nicely as venues. I’ve seen some amazing performances at Central Presbyterian Church, at studios like Baby Blue, some rather extraordinary Church of the Friendly Ghost events at Salvage Vanguard Theater, shows out in wide open fields, under bridges and in tunnels, and at house parties and in people’s backyards. The living room gig is nothing foreign to me; it’s more like a welcome change of pace.
Somehow, that may have been what CJ Vinson and Lauren Bucherie, the creative team behind local production company The Sessions, were thinking when they launched the Living Room Live series at The W Hotel. The living room vibe is definitely there, but kicked up a notch with the live music experience.
The Sessions teamed up with The W to initiate the series as a unique way of highlighting some of the best local talent around, and so far, it’s been impressive with artists like Danny Malone and Joanna Barbera, Quiet Company and (Houston band making a huge impression in Austin) The Tontons. Not bad at all. Tonight’s show is also killer, starring indie rock quartet The Couch, and instrumental indie-prog outfit Digital Antique.
Living Room Live is, indeed, an enjoyable musical experience. You’ll find tonight’s show at The W, 200 Lavaca St., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. This one is high on my list of recommendations.
