Enthralling, seductive, and haunted. BRUCE draws from ethereal wells and rivers rife with secrets…
The energy of BRUCE is best experienced with all senses. It blithely moves beyond “experimental,” the go-to for those struggling for an easy-reach category, into something theatrical, operatic, euphoric. Childlike, but without hiding the scars of experience. Every vibrant color imaginable bleeding into one another. Desire and revulsion. Breathy, creeping whispers morphing into brazen, bold belts with the unrestrained charisma of Tim Curry – not just Rocky Horror-era Curry, but fabulous, candid cabaret Curry. That, on so many levels, is BRUCE. Carrie Fussell owns the strut and swagger in this fever dream, and ultimately, the sweet embrace that captivates you.
Following a handful of tantalizing singles, the mothership arrives with the release of Must Love Teeth, where the scintillating “Cherry” and thirst bait “Water Pitcher” reside alongside a jaw-dropping rendition of Sugar Ray‘s “Someday” that Fussell singlehandedly turned into a torch song treasure. Bask in the beatific glory at BRUCE’s album release show tonight at Central Presbyterian Church in Downtown Austin, 200 E. 8th St. Doors at 7 p.m., with the show starting at 8 p.m. sharp.
Attendees are kindly asked to “dress in your Sunday best as though the lord is watching you (but like, the lord is John Waters).” And hallelujah to that.
