Night Lights

The Red River Cultural District is about to have an extraordinary light show unleashed in the neighborhood. Put aside your immediate assumption of “light show,” by the way. It’s time to reimagine.

Local non-profit Waller Creek Conservancy, organized to transform and sustain Waller Creek through creating a more connected urban area, recently commissioned five local design teams to create light installations that will illuminate the creekside walkways between 5th and 9th Streets. The temporary art pieces are all part of Creek Show: Night Light 2014, organized by the Conservancy to inspire more public interest in the preservation and future development of the area.

The exhibit free and open to the public, and there’s the perfect follow-up party to round out the evening perfectly at Empire Control Room, 606 E. 7th St. It’s a night of lights and music with performances by all-local talent: Quiet Company, Marmalakes, Ruby Jane, Calliope Musicals, Peter Shults of Hello Wheels, and Julian Acosta. The show kicks off at 7 p.m. with a DJ set curated by electronic artist Corduroi.

Brilliant! Take a lovely stroll, enjoy all the displays, and end the night with awesome local music. It’s an ideal interactive community experience. Very recommended.
