Rock the Funk

Steven Alcala

Another all ATX line-up takes over the outside stage at the Mohawk this weekend, Saturday Aug. 27. It’s lightning striking three times, baby:

  • Brownout already had something special with their eclectic spins of Latin funk, soul and psyched-up grooves. Yet these sonic explorations took them to another level with mind-blowingly unconventional covers, like their Public Enemy homage Fear Of A Brown Planet, and their spectacular takes of Black Sabbath classics a la Brown Sabbath. Of course, Ozzy was pleased.
  • Electro-funk, hip-hop, neo soul, and a jaunt with “Mad Science” worthy of its own Mad Max chapter. FYI – the visuals in that awesome Cléver Cardoso-directed video are badass, but experiencing the track live is where it’s at. Trouble In the Streets is fronted by a familiar voice, Nnedi Agbaroji, Project Traction artist and Golden Dawn Arkestra goddess.
  • To start out the night, it’s the slow-burning jams of acid/blues rock trio Je’ Texas. Guitarist Dylan Bishop, drummer Damien Llanes and bassist Gian Ortiz meld the traditional with the heavy. Just make sure it’s turned all the way up.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for this show on Mohawk’s outside stage.
