The community gathers to bid a fond farewell to the much-loved music venue this week…
News of another Austin venue shutting down is never welcome, but this one hit on another level, especially for being one of the remaining East Austin venues primarily booking Black artists.
The Skylark Lounge, the beloved Eastside music venue at 2039 Airport Blvd. that’s hosted performances for 13 years, is closing its doors at the end of the week. When asked by the Austin Chronicle why the venue is shutting down, Skylark owner Johnny LaTouf simply said, “It’s just time.” LaTouf added that the challenges of running a venue in an increasingly expensive city made it difficult to keep things going.
Skylark Lounge continues its farewell celebrations tonight through Sunday with performances by Goldie Pipes, Birdlegg & The Tight Fit Blues Band, Rochelle & The Sidewinders, Brian Scartocci, Soul Man Sam and others. The remaining shows are from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. each night through Sunday. See the full schedule on the Skylark Lounge website.
