Hometown fans of Houston-based quartet The Tontons knew from the band’s beginnings in 2008 that this was something awesome. Word of mouth got them even more attention. Then, soon after the release of their 2011 EP Golden, word had spread to new fans in Austin and beyond. More media attention put The Tontons in the spotlight. And this is only the beginning.
The proof is in the sound. To simply catagorize them as “indie” is too dismissive. Front woman Asli Omar, bassist Tom Nguyen, guitarist Adam Martinez and drummer Justin Martinez each have musical tastes that vary greatly – everything from metal to jazz to psych to pop. And being the talented and instinctive musicians that they are, they take a little something from everything, resulting in a genuinely eclectic style that won’t be pigeon-holed.
Tonight’s your chance to see The Tontons perform at Empire Control Room, 606 E. 7th St., with Dallas electronic act Ishi and Austin ambient synth popsters The Clouds Are Ghosts. Excellent triple bill. Doors open at 9 p.m. So recommended.
