Dreamiest pop to dark rock. Blushing’s new album goes beyond shoegaze.
No shortage of shreds from Austin quartet Blushing, only this time they’re continuing a shift from the dreamier shoegaze realm into something darker and edgier. Then they go and name their latest album Sugarcoat, though nothing saccharine seeps through this electrifying release.
Bassist/vocalist Christina Carmona and guitarist/vocalist Michelle Soto get right to the point with heavy hitters like “Slyce,” today’s smashing/crashing AMM-featured track “Silver Teeth,” and the anti-dreamy “Seafoam.” Even “Tamagotchi,” with a title calling to mind the cutesy virtual pet among other Kawaii-leaning vibes, doesn’t hold back. “In the back of any mind there’s a final line / You would cross at any time feeling justified…”
The new album is out tomorrow, and to celebrate, Blushing plays a release/tour kickoff show tonight, Thursday May 2, at Hotel Vegas. On the bill is a trio also heading out on tour, Ringo Deathstarr, and the show opens with a set by Prehuman. Doors at 7 p.m.
