What brews beneath the surface? Jo Alice explores the composure belying whatever’s unspoken…
It came to Emily Levy while writing at producer Mike McCarthy‘s studio in Nashville, emerging around a slow-tempo drum loop of McCarthy’s that spurred its brooding movement.
This follow-up to “Give Me Some Good News (When I Call)” by Levy’s musical project Jo Alice takes on slightly darker, haunted tones, beckoning to all that remains unspoken. “That’s No Way” encapsulates a mounting tension behind a facade of composure. Does silence equal bravery? “…Your losing here and that has been your shame / You’re saving all the things you ought to say / and that’s no way.”
“There were a lot of changes happening in my world at that time, and definitely some turbulence under the surface that I was trying to make sense of in that song,” Levy recalls.
Don’t miss Jo Alice’s single release show tonight at The Continental Gallery, just upstairs above The Continental Club on South Congress. The music starts at 8:30 p.m., followed by guitarist Josh Perdue at 10:30 p.m.
