LP Giobbi

My KUTX // May 27, 2023

Austin’s LP Giobbi has a really unique background. Born in Oregon, she earned a jazz piano degree from UC Berkeley, but a chance encounter with electronic music changed her life. Recruited to play in an electronic band featuring all jazz musicians, LP learned how to apply her improvisational skills to a metronomic medium.

But when it came time to go solo, she reached back to her childhood, which was soundtracked by her parents’ Grateful Dead obsession. LP started incorporating this influence into her own psychedelicized house music, and soon she was performing on bills with Dead & Co., the post-Jerry Garcia incarnation of the band. Trixie Garcia, Jerry’s daughter, tapped LP for an official remix of Jerry’s 1972 solo debut. Dead homages also pop up in LP’s phenomenal debut album, Light Places (the title is, of course, a nod to “Scarlet Begonias”).

This scene-hopping style is perfect for LP’s adopted Austin home, where ravers and Deadheads rub shoulders at shows across the city. She’s excited to offer her own Austin soundtrack as our guest DJ this week. LP’s My KUTX episode traces her Dead roots and her deep love for jazz piano, as well as diving into what it’s like to remix Portugal. The Man and play Daft Punk’s synthesizers. Hear LP Giobbi’s My KUTX on Saturday, May 27 at 6 p.m. or listen anytime right here.
