Support for My KUTX comes from Imogene and Willie.
For Melissa Carper, country music is a big tent: there are fiddles and steel guitars, yes, but there’s also room for blues and jazz. The Austin musician actually returns country closer to its roots as a multi-genre stew of music. Carper’s voice has a twang in it–taken from her home state of Nebraska and from playing in her family band, the Carper Family–but it sounds just as comfortable singing Billie Holiday songs and jazz standards.
On Borned In Ya, Carper’s latest album, she continues to explore country tradition while putting her own unique spin on the sound. She celebrates the album with a release show on September 7 at the 04 Center, with Jenny Parrott opening. And this week on My KUTX, Carper is also our guest DJ, taking a spin through her many influences, from country stalwarts like Jimmie Rodgers and Kitty Wells to influences like Lead Belly and Frank Sinatra. Hear Melissa Carper’s My KUTX on Saturday, August 31 at 6 p.m. or listen anytime right here.
