The Los Sundowns

My KUTX // March 6, 2021

The Los Sundowns is a new project from Austin’s Beto Martinez (Grammy-winning guitarist for Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, and more) and Chicago’s Daniel Villarreal, a drummer for Dos Santos and a DJ. Inspired by a range of Latin American sounds of the 1960s and ’70s, the pair crafted an EP that’s all about atmosphere. Each song sets a specific mood, punctuated by Martinez’s psychedelic guitar stylings, Villarreal’s polyrhythms, and guest spots from members of Brownout, Dos Santos, the Guadaloops and more. It’s easily one of my favorite Austin releases this year.

This week on My KUTX, Martinez and Villarreal are the guest DJs. From Chilean crooners and Panamanian Afro-soul to marimba jams and psychedelic Colombian music, they dig deep into the Los Sundowns’ incredible influences. Hear the Los Sundowns’ My KUTX on Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m. or anytime in the player above.
