Support for My KUTX comes from Imogene and Willie.
Over the past few years, one Austin band I kept coming across was the Point. There they were, holding down residencies at C-boys or playing seemingly every week at some Austin club. Or in casual conversation, music fans telling me their new favorite band was the Point. It’s easy to hear why: this band can play.
Their albums are all over the place. I checked out Phonkadelic first and was surprised to find an album-length worship of vintage Texas rap beats. 2022’s Berto’s Banquet was a 180, dialing up psych-rock riffs and Tejano soul balladeering. This year’s Maldito Animal throws together dub reggae, North African desert blues, and Brazilian bossa nova. Every time I listen to the Point, I keep wondering: this is all the same band?!
Guitarist Jack Montesinos and organist Joe Roddy, the core of the band, have been playing together since middle school. All those years have turned them into not only first-rate musicians but also omnivorous listeners. This week on My KUTX, Jack and Joe take the guest DJ controls for a head-spinning hour of recent favorites, which include Saharan and American blues, Thai psych-rock, Lebanese pop, and more. Hear The Point’s My KUTX on Saturday, August 10 at 6 p.m. or listen anytime right here. And catch the Point at the Far Out Lounge on August 24 for MeadowFest, supporting Out Youth Austin and the SIMS Foundation.
