In the second half of the 2000s, Atlanta based artist Washed Out emerged from the MySpace era of the internet with a unique and unmistakable sound. With heavy rotation on internet playlists, support from Pitchfork and his track “Feel It All Around” used as the theme for the hit TV show Portlandia, his sound firmly ingrained itself in the subconscious of indie music fans. Whether he’s using samples and drum machines or working with a live band, he’s able to consistently summon the reverb drenched sentiment and emotion of 80s and early 90s music while still sounding completely modern and original.
Purple Noon is Washed Out’s fourth full length studio album (out August 7 on Sub Pop Records) and it is quite possibly his most mature and accessible record to date. For this release, he’s put aside his sample collage techniques from past records to focus on live instruments and songwriting influenced by artists like Sade and The Cars‘ song “Drive”. I recently had the chance to sit down and talk with him about the new album, collaborating with other artists, the creative process and more. – Andrew Brown, Soundfounder
