p1nkstar

***June is Pride Month and all month long, KUTX is celebrating LGBTQ+ musicians who have shaped Austin’s music scene.***

PRIDE FEATURE: p1nkstar

p1nkstar just might be your new fav pop electronic superstar. Born in Tampico, Mexico, p1nkstar moved to Austin in 2014 with a mission to morph her Latinx roots with queer-ass global hyperpop energy. Hitting the ground running, p1nkstar has gained notoriety from the Austin Chronicle to Texas Monthly and even Billboard Magazine.

p1nkstar, so called the Austin Chronicle’s “Queer Pop Princess” has made it her mission to use her growing and magnetic platform to create spaces for queer and trans artists, herself taking on the role o a “hyper queer pop superstar,” something she says she didn’t see or know of while growing-up in Mexico, but realized while studying at UT Austin. Essentially, what started as a school project has led to sharing bills with powerhouses like the Ladies of LCD Soundsystem and Charli XCX. In 2021, p1nkstar premiered the concert film or “Girls Like Us” on Hotel Free TV, Hotel Vegas’s answer to the pandemic and giving artists a platform to get paid. The video was a full-scale cinematic production, involving queer and trans artists from Austin and beyond to imagine “a world in which trans and queer people are celebrated, rather than marginalized or punished, and what that would look like.”

p1nkstar’s mission and success is unparalleled, spreading the trans mega popstar gospel all over the state and becoming the first openly transgender artist to win not one, but three Austin Music Awards.
