Caleb De Casper 6.3.22

***June is Pride Month and all month long, KUTX is celebrating queer musicians who shape Austin’s music scene.***

Pride Month Feature: Host: Taylor Wallace; Producer: Deidre Gott

Growing up as an openly gay youth in North Carolina Caleb De Casper recalls one piano teacher who told him, “as a gay songwriter, the world will never accept your voice or point of view.”

De Casper eventually moved to Austin, where he and his ever-present stilettos have made long strides up the ladder of Austin’s music scene, lifting-up and creating space for other up-and-coming queer Austin musicians in his wake. A classically trained pianist and vocalist, Caleb blends those talents singularly with an air of theater that translates to his studio recordings, but with a dimension that can only be realized through his live performances, that braid camp and glam rock passion with jazz lounge sophistication and touch of elegance.

This year, April 21st was declared Caleb De Casper Day by the City of Austin and was commemorated with a performance by De Casper during a City Council meeting. A photo posted later by Austin City Councilman Jose “Chito” Vela received a deluge of homophobic and transphobic responses online that led Vela to declare May 5th All Means Y’all Day, “a day of celebration for the LGBTQ community’s indispensable contributions to our culture and society, and for those that have fought for equality and inclusion,” said Vela ahead of the day.

Caleb De Casper joined us in Studio 1A to share a few songs off his debut full-length record, Femme Boy, out now on Chicken Ranch Records. Watch the full performance below and scroll down to get some more goodies from our June Artist of the Month.
