Jake Lloyd

My KUTX // July 11, 2020

Jake Lloyd’s music is a blend of R&B, rock, and soul, bringing a collage-like quality to a live band experience. He recently told KUTX’s Aaron “Fresh” Knight” that he feels like he has to make music this way, partially due to his own diverse interests and skills but also because as a black artist in Austin, he often gets pigeonholed. “[I’m] going out of my way to show my genre-crossing ability, I mean literally bending over backwards to show my range,” he says. “What needs to change is first, the level of respect for all artistic expression in this town needs raising.”

This week on My KUTX, Lloyd is our guest DJ, expressing himself through an hour of influences and inspirations. Those range from his dedicated Prince fandom and love of Ray Charles to ’90s R&B, the boundary-pushing of Fishbone and Bad Brains, and more. Hear Jake Lloyd’s My KUTX on Saturday, July 11 at 6 p.m. or any time in the player above.
