My KUTX: James Taylor of Holy Mountain & Harvest Thieves

Last month, Holy Mountain announced it was closing its doors in October due to a massive rent hike. Like a lot of Red River clubs, it almost fell victim to its own success. Property values and rents are skyrocketing in Austin as cover charges are falling or disappearing altogether. The recent Austin Music Census paints a gloomy picture for a lot of the creators of Austin’s music scene.

James Taylor is one such creator. For the past sixteen years, he’s lived in Austin, playing drums in bands like Harvest Thieves, East Cameron Folkcore, and Applied Pressure, and he also owns and operates Holy Mountain. Taylor is Minnesota-bound after the club shuts down, but not before lending his musical expertise as our guest DJ this week. Catch Harvest Thieves at the Cactus Cafe on July 18 and help Holy Mountain go out with a bang this summer and fall by taking in a show or two. In the meantime, Taylor has an hour-long mix of Austin and Minnesota songs. Listen anytime below his playlist.
