NPR LIVE SESSIONS/KUTX – Bill Callahan, shot from a safe distance by Michael Minasi August 2020.
The 53 year-old artist Bill Callahan, with his deep thoughtful drawl, first moved to Austin over a decade and a half ago.
Last summer, he visited Studio 1A to celebrate the long awaited release Shepard in a Sheepskin Vest, his first in almost six years. A prolific songwriter, Callahan has released an album every year or two – sometimes two in a year – since his first release under the Smog moniker in 1992. The six year hiatus between albums was unusual to fans, but the reason for that wait was nothing out of the ordinary. Just the marriage and a baby escalator ride.
Now that those big life changes have settled down a bit, Callahan is back at it, multi tasking by writing his latest album last year while on tour with Shepard in A Sheepskin Vest. Gold Record was recorded in the before times and has seen a digital release, one soothing song a week since, June 29th with a physical release September 4, 2020.
