Austin Piazzolla Quintet at KUTX 6.24.13

The Austin Piazzolla Quintet plays a variety of traditional tango music named nuevo tango, largely developed by the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla. This relatively modern take on tango incorporates elements of jazz and classical music in a way that is arguably a natural evolution of the traditional style as opposed to an entirely new subgenre, and the Austin Piazzolla Quintet is taking the next profound steps in that evolution. Founded by violinist James Anderson, this lively quintet also features Mike Maddux on accordion, Jonathan Geer on piano, Pat Harris on bass, and Chris McQueen on guitar – resulting in a veritable supergroup of Austin-based musicians.

The Quintet offers varied interpretations on Piazzolla’s compositions as well as astonishing original tangos that are not to be missed. They also happened to come by our studio for an exclusive performance, so grab a dance partner and listen in below for the hottest tango Austin has to offer!
