Cilantro Boombox Fights Fire With Fire

Michael Minasi / KUTX
Michael Minasi Cilantro Boombox performs in Studio 1A during the stations’ open house on June 29, 2023, at KUT Public Media Studios.

Cilantro Boombox helped put Austin Funk on the map when they formed in 2012. Now over ten years later, the band has new tunes and the same positive energy that made them instant local favorites. The band is turning up the heat again with some new music, giving fans a sign of life and promise of a groovier tomorrow.

The fusion of Latin American, Pan-African and electronic jazz are just the beginnings of the sonic cocktail that is Cilantro Boombox’s sound. With little regard for the rising temperature of Austin summers, the band is instead using fire to fight fire with their newest single “Little Sign.” Energetic drum lines and harmonizing horns force you to move your body to the beat. On their visit to Studio 1A during a recent open house, the sweltering heat and body sweat were fully embraced in the deeply funky songs “Fuego” and “Y-O-U.”
