Hong Kong Wigs 7.11.19

Back in January, our weeknight host Taylor Wallace made the decision to keep track of every single Free Week 2019 show and to listen to every band with available music. For context, Free Week is sort of a local SXSW, taking place the week following New Year’s Day to boost bar sales during one of the slowest weeks of the year by packing venues with stacked line-ups each night of that week. When digging into the line-ups, one band jumped out based on name alone: Hong Kong Wigs. Having no internet presence, much less any music, something about them seemed worth checking out. What we found was a powerful rock trio led by Sweet Spirit bassist Jon Fitcher, helming the mic and wielding a six string.

Joined by bassist Anastasia Wright (Tyler Jordan & the Negative Space and Black Basements) and drummer Adam Galvan (Ex Romantika), Hong Kong Wigs was conceived to be Fitcher’s solo project. As he says, “when you’re the bassist in Sweet Spirit, there’s not a whole lot of room to shred….and I wanted to shred.” Their debut EP was a surprise release in early February, but they dropped into our Studio 1A ahead of last week’s Taylor’d Frequency show and to tease some tunes from their upcoming full-length, due out early 2020.
