Indoor Creature’s guest DJ set on My KUTX will give you an idea of what to expect from their latest record Living in Darkness. It’s a DJ set full of eclectic choices and surprises–everything from Stereolab, the Beach Boys, Air, Curtis Mayfield, Steely Dan, and more. Obviously, they have great taste, especially for a group of twenty-somethings, but how could one record take inspiration from all of these different places? After Living in Darkness becomes your next obsession, you’ll start to see the pattern.
Stereolab brought avant-garde electronic production to pop music, Curtis Mayfield imbued soul with lush dramatic arrangements, and everyone knows what Brian Wilson went through in the studio to perfect the Beach Boys sound. The members of Austin’s Indoor Creature aren’t just music nerds, they’re production nerds. Like their heroes, Indoor Creature makes meticulously crafted infectious pop music, but among their influences, Donald Fagen’s combination of breezy sounds and dark lyrics is the heart of Living in Darkness.
Is yacht rock cool? Who cares when it sounds this good. Thankfully we don’t have to wait twenty years for Indoor Creature to put together a live show like Steely Dan. Another blessing is that they put as much love in their live sets as the record–check out their Studio 1A session below.
