Monk Parker 9.27.17

Monk Parker makes surrealist neo-americana for the heartbroken. His music is what it’s like to leave the bar after last call and levitate all the way home–looking over lakes, corn fields, and decaying movie theaters. Originally based in New York, Monk Parker returned to his family farm outside of Austin and released his first solo album at age 40. His sophomore release, Crown of Sparrows, shows no sign of a slump. Parker’s songs start slow and build up to a climax of vocal harmonies, wailing guitars, and funereal horns. The second track, “Gaudy Frame,” was born out of Parker feeling like he was in a Rooney Mara movie during his European tour, but he would be equally at home at the Roadhouse Bar in Twin Peaks. His music is anachronistic, but belongs to no specific era.  We were lucky to have Monk Parker stop by Studio 1A on Wednesday. If you missed the performance, check it out below!
