With two decades of music behind them North Mississippi Allstars are proving that blues, much like a fine wine, only gets better with age. Formed in 1996 by brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, sons of legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickson, the boys have long stayed true to their musical roots. Allstars’ latest release, Prayer for Peace, features their trademark hybrid-blues. Infused with psychedelic electrics and a rock & roll sensibility, the album is a beat-crazed call for unity in a time that so desperately needs it. The Allstars present blues as a sort of evolving oral history; paying homage to their country music community through collaborations and covers; their reworking of Fred McDowell’s “You Got to Move” features Danielle Nicole and some smoking hot guitar from Hill Country’s Kenny Brown. Put together during Allstars’ 2016 tour the brothers see Prayer for Peace as a collection of ‘field recordings’; they stage tested the tracks, then immediately laid them down. The result is organic, passionate and intensely energetic; it is music dripping with sweat. The boys came to Studio 1A to show us some of their favourite tracks, check it out below!
