Poi Dog Pondering is an Americana band known for their genre-bending music– a mix of Polynesian-inspired pop, folk, funk, techno, blue-eyed soul, and rock. Violins, violas, and cellos are also present in many of their tunes making the total package something different and fresh. The group came together in Hawaii in 1985, and two years later moved to Austin where they recorded their first three albums. In 1992, the band relocated yet again, this time to Chicago where they now reside. It was in Chicago, they first took a departure into electronic music–a move that was somewhat ill-advised, but we’re glad they had the cojones to do. In 2012, the band released Live at Metro Chicago, a fifty-one song quadruple CD box-set and four hour DVD that encapsulates the band’s two night concert at Metro Chicago December 2 and 3 of 2011. Also featured is a short film by Frank Orrall (guitar, vocals) on the band’s history as Bohemian street musicians early on all the way to present-date. We are excited to say, Poi Dog Pondering will be playing at Austin’s Continental Club February 13, 14, and 15.
