Want to dance and get weird? Do the robot, shake your ass, and twirl around like the free spirit that you are all within the same song? Crank up Zeroes and Ones by Austin’s quintet The Black and White Years. The band’s super catchy indie, electro-pop has elements that can be described as modern and Talking Heads-esque, which coincidentally may be how the group got discovered. In 2007 the Black and White Years were playing a SXSW show at Opal Divines to a crowd of seven. Doesn’t sound like much of a show, but one of the seven happened to be Talking Head’s Jarry Harrison, and he liked what he heard. Flash forward several months and Harrison was producing there first full-length record, The Black and White Years in California. Since then, the band’s played big-name festivals (including Austin’s ACL Fest and Fun Fun Fun Fest) and received multiple honors at the Austin Music Awards. Now they’re played by college stations near and far and are currently one of the most talked about bands coming out of Austin. On January 21 the NPR Band to Watch (2012) is due to release their latest full-length album, Strange Figurines, which has been called the group’s most compelling work to date.
