Waxahatchee is making sharp and honest indie straight from her broken heart. Originally created as the solo project of Katie Crutchfield back in 2011, the intervening years have seen the addition of a backing band, including Katie’s sister Allison Crutchfield. Out in the Storm, Waxahatchee’s fourth studio album and latest release, is about sifting through the aftermath of a break-up. Intensely personal, Crutchfield uses the album to explore and embrace her imperfections. In her blistering, bitter opener “Never Been Wrong” Crutchfield brazenly admits to fighting dirty, twisting tales and pitying herself for not getting her way. This personal tension is reflected in stuttering percussion and blaring guitar. Her most rock-oriented song to date is held together by sweet vocals and clear harmonies. This track sets the tone for the entire album; angry, sharp, often sweet and always vulnerable. It is her most sonically, and emotionally, mature work to date. Waxahatchee, stellar band in tow, joined us in Studio 1A ahead of their show at Mohawk. Check it out below then go and see them for yourself!
