Wolf Parade 2.3.20

Count Canadian indie outfit Wolf Parade as the latest to suffer from content fatigue. The feelings of mental overload associated with screens demanding constant attention soon manifested into the band’s latest album, Thin Mind, with the title referencing a technology-induced lack of focus. Released on Jan. 24, Thin Mind sees Wolf Parade meditate on these anxieties while endeavoring to find a hopeful lining. The group fuses together their fears for the future with the sounds of the past with a rich sound centered around arching and pulsing new wave synths. The ’80s-inspired production, combined with full, angst-tinged vocals, pays homage to acts like Echo & the Bunnymen and The The, but modern touches help the band serve up more than pure nostalgia. Pulsing drum beats and layered noise mimic a static buzz, emphasizing the feelings of disconnect found in the lyrics. Thin Mind also marks Wolf Parade’s return to its founding three members, comprised of guitarist Dan Boeckner, keyboardist Spencer Krug and drummer Arlen Thompson, with Boeckner and Krug both doing vocals. The trio first started in Montreal in 2003, and 17 years later, there’s an apparent and natural ease as they play together. Now on the front end of a tour in support of Thin Mind, Wolf Parade made a pit stop at Studio 1A ahead of a Feb. 3 show at the Mohawk with Land Of Talk opening.
