Basia Bulat: “Fool”

This week, the Song of the Day features SXSW 2016 artists. Catch up on last week’s picks here.

Since debuting over a decade ago, Toronto’s Basia Bulat has been pegged as a folk singer. Her first few albums were largely acoustic, but she’s always had a sky-reaching voice that truly transcends genre.

Bulat took some tentative steps towards pop on her 2013 effort Tall Tall Shadow, and this year’s Good Advice makes good on her breakout promise. She teamed up with My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, a perfect pairing for her new batch of songs. Bulat can make the simple sound huge, like on “Fool.” It’s a shock of color in her sterling collection of songs. Listen to “Fool” below and catch her live at the Four Seasons on Friday.
