Black Lips: “Squatting In Heaven”

Hot Luck brings together two of Austin’s favorite things: music and food. Spearheaded by Franklin BBQ maestro Aaron Franklin and former Transmission Events and Fun Fun Fun Fest honcho James Moody, the festival packs in four days of mouthwatering meals from some of the best chefs in Austin and beyond, all served with a heaping of rock-and-roll.

Thursday’s Hot Luck headliners are the Black Lips, basically barbecue in music form: messy, greasy, and fire-blasted. The Atlanta outfit has been cooking up a blend of punk and psychedelia for close to two decades, and it boils over on its latest, the brilliantly-titled Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?. Guests Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon add some star power, but the Lips’ particular star has always been dirty and scruffy, no matter who’s paying attention. “Squatting In Heaven” is perfectly imperfect, and the perfect soundtrack for Hot Luck’s helpings.

“Squatting In Heaven” appears on Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?, out now. Black Lips play live in our Studio 1A on Thursday, May 18 at 2 p.m. and later that night at the Barracuda.
