Giulia Millanta: “4th & Vodka”

Tuscany and Central Texas share some geography, both featuring rugged, rolling hills and farmland. Giulia Millanta was born in Florence and later moved to Austin, but her spiky, arid songwriting could fit in either place. Carrie Rodriguez and Howe Gelb are good reference points for Millanta, desert dreamers that can put something personal in this kind of sprawling folk music.

Unsurprisingly, Millanta teamed up with Gelb on her fifth album, Moonbeam Parade, along with a who’s-who of Austin folk: Charlie Sexton, Michael Fracasso, George Reiff, and more. She can sing in four languages, but the wandering spirits at the heart of songs like “4th & Vodka” are universal.

“4th & Vodka” appears on Moonbeam Parade, out now. Giulia Millanta plays tonight at Strange Brew.
