Hippo Campus: “Little Grace”

Minnesota’s Twin Cities have birthed its fair share of notable bands, from the Replacements to Low and the Hold Steady. Minneapolis’ Hippo Campus sound nothing like these groups; there’s not a single Midwestern identifier in their sound. Instead, the quartet relies on its education–the members met at a performing arts high school–and its youthfulness to set themselves apart. Their debut EP, Bashful Creatures–produced by Low’s Alan Sparhawk–has earned glowing praise from Twin Cities and international outlets like Britain’s NME for its blend of power pop and Afrobeat. “Little Grace” turns its attention to high school romance, but its catchy enough for all ages.
