New Madrid’s Southern psychedelia took off for even spacier environments on this year’s magnetkingmagnetqueen. The Athens, GA quartet’s third album is stuffed with abstraction and guitar freakouts, but the longform mode suits them. New Madrid finds beauty and power in big swaths of noise, perfect for a hazy late-afternoon set at ACL Fest. Even live in our much-more-intimate Studio 1A, the group can conjure up this magic. “Knots” has a laid-back twang to it, but it swirls to a big, crashing finish of Gordian proportions.
