Whether she’s providing atmospheric rap hooks or singing under the name Psychic Twin, Erin Fein knows how to set a mood. On Strange Diary, she does just that, chronicling her recent divorce and split time between Illinois and New York. Unsurprisingly, the results are chilly, but they’re also strangely uplifting, like some sort of electronic exorcism.
“Lose Myself” shows an affinity for Cocteau Twins, where the production nearly swallows Fein whole. But words and shapes appear in the darkness: “when I go farther, I lose myself” goes the chorus. Undoubtedly, there’s a loss of self in the end of a relationship, but on this song, Fein explores her own rebirth. It’s just a different side of the same coin.
“Lose Myself” appears on Strange Diary, out September 9 via Polyvinyl.
