(Sandy) Alex G is Alex Giannascoli, a 24-year-old Philadelphia-based artist whose music already sprawls across eight albums. His songs can be delicate and frail or fuzzed-out explosions. His guitar playing even pops up a few times on Frank Ocean’s Endless and Blonde.
Rocket, (Sandy) Alex G’s just-released eighth album, is nominally a folk-rock record, but it’s a broken-down, anything-goes idea of folk music, the kind where stream-of-consciousness seems just as important as any strummed chord. “Proud” is proudly ramshackle, extending choruses a few beats longer than normal while a piano part sounds like it drunkenly stumbled in from nearby honky-tonk. Holding it all together is (Sandy) Alex G’s DIY drive, crafting an atmosphere that is unmistakably himself.
“Proud” appears on Rocket, out now. (Sandy) Alex G plays the Parish on Saturday, June 10.
