Scan Hopper: “Ultrachorus”

Named after an old AOL screen name, Scan Hopper, an Austin-based musical project led by Scott Hopkins, has been crafting homemade psych pop since its inception in 2009. Released after a decade-long hiatus, their latest album, Covissa Nova, showcases the full scope of their unique Ween meets The Zombies meets Joe Wong sound. In their time as a band before the hiatus, they even shared the stage with legendary musician Roky Erickson as one of the opening acts on New Year’s 2016 at Spider House (now The Ballroom).

However, during the COVID-19 quarantine, Hopkins worked tirelessly to record and produce the majority of the songs on Covissa Nova. One standout track, “Ultrachorus,” was inspired by the birth of Hopkins’ first child and added to the album as the final touch, featuring a heartwarming duet with his wife, Courtney Czar. The song’s inclusion was a pivotal moment, as it brought the entire album together, infusing it with the uplift and warmth it needed.

You can catch Scan Hopper back in the saddle performing “Ultrachorus” and debuting more songs from Covissa Nova at Sahara Lounge TONIGHT, where “The Island Years” will also be making its live debut.

Upcoming Scan Hopper shows:

TONIGHT, Thursday, November 9 at 11:00PM at Sahara Lounge

Sunday, November 19 at 5:00PM at The Parlor
