James Hunter is a man out-of-time, an English singer in the here-and-now who sounds like he could’ve competed with Ray Charles and Sam Cooke on the R&B charts. It’s not just his honey-sweet voice. His songs (and crack backing band) are slick explosions of happiness, the sound of a group truly embodying the body-moving roots of soul music. A band like this is best experienced live, where a song like “Stranded” can bounce around the room and take you for an ageless spin.
