Vivalda Dula: “Henda Mua Ngola”

All this week, the Song of the Day features artists playing at this weekend’s Wobeon Fest–the Austin world music festival taking over Ironwood Hall on Saturday.

For someone nicknamed the “Queen of the Drum,” perhaps its unsurprising that Vivalda Dula was a dancer first. The Angolan artist got her start with several Angolan and African dance companies, and she also comes from a long lineage of musicians. Her great-grandfather played the African xylophone and the thumb piano, while she picked up storytelling from her grandfather and dancing from her mother. Fittingly, “Henda Mua Ngola” is a wistful, nostalgic look back at both her home and family.

Catch Vivalda Dua at Wobeon Fest starting at 6 p.m. on the main stage.
