Warm Soda: “Tell Me In A Whisper”

Warm Soda has long sounded like a band out-of-time. Matthew Melton started the project in the Bay Area before moving to Austin a few years ago, bringing with him a penchant for crafting dusty, dog-eared power-pop that slots in nicely next to the Kinks, Big Star, and the dBs.

But now time has finally run out on Warm Soda. Melton is moving on to a new group called Dream Machine, whose debut is out later this year via Thee Oh Sees’ label. Warm Soda gives us one more fizzy (and fuzzy) serving in the form of I Don’t Wanna Grow Up, which might as well be power-pop’s enduring mission statement. “Tell Me In A Whisper” wears its DIY heart on its sleeve, but there’s real heart underneath the tape hiss. It’s a final transmission from some alternate rock-and-roll universe, beamed out with equal parts sugar and bite.

“Tell Me In A Whisper” appears on I Don’t Wanna Grow Up, out now via Castle Face.
