Weaves: “Walkaway”

Toronto four-piece Weaves really impressed last year with its self-titled debut, crafting something really catchy and beautiful out of ugly, distorted sounds. The band returns with Wide Open, and “Walkaway” is something else entirely. The distortion is still front-and-center, but it’s in service to a hell of a ballad. “Walkaway” pulls a little bit from Pixies’ loud-quiet-loud dynamic and blows it up to arena-rock proportions. That’s partially due to Jasymn Burke’s vocals, which sit right on the edge of exhaustion but still filled with unflagging energy. “Walk away girl, if you know what’s good for you,” she warns, sounding like a narrator who can still get her hands dirty.

“Walkaway” appears on Wide Open, out October 6 via Kanine Records.
