Over the past decade or so, it’s been interesting seeing the generational shift in Austin’s country scene, from trad honky-tonks like the Broken Spoke to newer, more punk/alternative-friendly dance clubs like the White Horse. So it’s fitting that a Red River stalwart like the Mohawk would showcase this scene with a Free Week show tonight (and here’s hoping they do so more often).
The bill is a who’s who of Austin alt-Americana: Bluegrass firebrands Whiskey Shivers, “browngrass” stalwarts Sour Bridges, alt-country revivalists (and Artist of the Month alumni) Harvest Thieves, and honky-tonk tokers Mayeux & Broussard. “Free” kicks off Whiskey Shivers’ 2014 self-titled effort with a time-honored sentiment: counting down the work hours til you’re free as a bird.
“Free” appears on Whiskey Shivers, out now. Whiskey Shivers play a Free Week show tonight at the Mohawk.
