Cilantro Boombox is one of those unique Austin groups that could’ve only formed with access to our fertile music breeding grounds. Like many bands, Cilantro Boombox started as a couple of musicians, vocalist/bassist Felix Pacheco and saxophonist Joe Woullard, playing for fun. Before long, the snowball effect of the Austin music scene took over and Felix and Joe found themselves with a handful of the city’s best funk and soul players to back them up. That rich well of musical talent includes Andres Villegas on guitar, Christopher “Zumbi” Richards on trombone, alto-saxophonist Joshua Thompson, and percussionists Greg Clifford and Ricardo Gonzalez, and together they create incredibly tight African and Latin-influenced funk. Now, 5 years after their 2012 self-titled debut record, Cilantro Boombox is one of the most sought after party starters in the city. We got them to stop by Studio 1A before sharing a stage with fellow funk heavy hitters Hard Proof at The Mohawk. Enjoy their session at the bottom of this post!
