New Fresh City: Spring 2023

Maile Carballo / KUTX

Four fresh tracks from Austin artists

For the past couple of years, KUTX host Aaron “Fresh” Knight has kept a running playlist of some of the best new releases from Central Texas hip hop and R&B artists called “New Fresh City.” There is so much good stuff on there we can’t share it all, so here are four of his favorites from the past few months. We’ll be back throughout the year to share more from the playlist but you can always follow along with the info below.

Find the New Fresh City playlist at the bottom of this post and be sure to catch Fresh on-air every Saturday morning 10a-2p and Saturday night 10p-1a on The Breaks

Uncommon People – “Had Enough”

With the alternative R&B Austin group Uncommon People releasing their final project with the EP, Peace, I’m Out, here is the lead single, “Had Enough”, which contains their signature smoothness and sets the tone for what listeners can expect from the EP—just in time for the spring/summer time vibes of love and love lost.

BLK ODYSSY – “Honeysuckle Neck Bone”

Coming off a major year like 2022, with a brand new record deal with Empire, the re-release of their debut album, and a previous single release, “Lay Low”, BLK ODYSSY is on a roll and doesn’t seem to be letting up. They team up with a Funkmaster Boosty Collins for their latest single, “Honeysuckle Neckbone”, which seems to set the stage for their next album. The smooth funk vibes, and a sample of Bootsy’s classic, “I’d Rather Be With You”, makes for a perfect combination mixed with frontman Sam Houston’s falsetto melodies.

Grace Sorensen – “Digits (ft. Magna Carda)”

Grace Sorensen is an artist I like to call Wonder Kid. At just 18 years old, you could already see the potential she possessed as an artist. Now 21, her sultry, smokey vocals are taking the Austin music scene by storm. “Digits” put that all on full display, from her singing to the great songwriting that mixes well with the raps of Magna Carda’s Megz Kelly. It’s a perfect pairing that has made Grace a favorite here at KUTX.

Whookilledkenny – “Set The Trends”

Re-introducing himself to the Austin music scene, Whookilledkenny (formerly Kenny Gee), hits us with a trendy-sounding single, “Set The Trends”. The song features a hard-hitting beat, and catchy hooks, along with a cool laid back flow that fits Kenny perfectly. This is a song you can hear all summer, set to the vibes for a cool chill day out at one of Austin’s green belts, or a nice pool day at Barton Springs.
