New Fresh City: Summer Jam Edition

A Summer Sampling of Austin Hip-Hop

By Aaron “Fresh” Knight

For the past couple of years, KUTX host Aaron “Fresh” Knight has kept a running playlist of some of the best new releases from Central Texas hip hop and R&B artists called “New Fresh City.” For this edition, we’re checking out artists from this year’s The Breaks’ Summer Jam on Friday, July 21st, now part of the Red River Cultural District’s weekend of free shows, Hot Summer Nights.

Find the New Fresh City playlist at the bottom of this post and be sure to catch Fresh on-air every Saturday morning 10a-2p and Saturday night 10p-1a on The Breaks.

Grace Sorensen – “Miss Majesty”

The young. smokey-voiced soul singer follows up her popular single “Digits” with this smooth tune that explores the intimacy between lovers. Her songwriting craft is on par with some of R&B’s biggest stars.

JEDI512 – “Fresh”

No, this song is not about your host, Fresh. This is one of the best storytelling songs from an artist out of the Austin area I’ve heard recently. JEDI tells the tale of a young man living the fast life. and all the consequences that come along with it.

NAJ! – “Blocked”

In a world that seems to be run by female rappers, NAJ! Is one of many Austin-based women sharing her life experiences. And this song makes it clear playing around with her will not end well. Mess with her and you will end up BLOCKED!! An anthem for for sure!
