January 3 marks the birthday of one of the most inventive producers and arrangers of the 20th century—Sir George Martin. From his landmark collaborations with a little Liverpudlian foursome called The Beatles to British comedy gods, The Goons, to his work as a composer, Martin bridged musical tradition with popular innovation. So on this day, what would have been his 98th birthday, I’ve picked a couple of appropriately far-out Beatles covers. First, a bit of raga-pop from Lord Sitar on “I Am the Walrus.” Then we have an electro-psych-prog excursion from Tangerine Dream and their version of “Tomorrow Never Knows.”
