Austin Music We’re Loving – February 2024

Four new songs from Austin artists that we can’t get enough of.

Mike Melinoe – “CASPER”

In the past decade, hip hop and R&B have gone from outliers in the Austin music scene to one of the city’s most exciting exports, thanks in large part to genre busting songwriters and rappers like Mike Melinoe. A compulsive creator, Mike Melinoe uses his music as a springboard to explore other interests like fashion, design, and production. Songs like “CASPER” use gloomy beats, sirens, and retro synths to create a fully immersive experience for listeners. Witness Mike Melinoe’s magnetic stage presence for yourself on Wednesday March 13, when he performs at Revival Coffee for the The Breaks’ SXSBreaks Showcase.

San Gabriel – “Over My Shoulder

Originally an in-demand picker in Austin’s bluegrass scene, James Bookert has transformed himself into one of the city’s best pop songsmiths. Performing under the moniker San Gabriel, his newest single, “Over My Shoulder,” is a gem of a song that layers dream-like vocal hooks over bright guitars and an effervescent beat. It doesn’t hurt that James is a die-hard KUTX fan and one of the nicest guys we’ve ever met. Keep an eye out for more new music from San Gabriel in 2024.

Gary Clark Jr. – “This is Who We Are”

Austin’s reigning guitar hero teams up with local singer-songwriter Naala for the moody rock epic “This Is Who We Are.” Opening with an operatic chorus asking “What happens to a shooting star?,” Gary Clark Jr. turns this astronomical phenomenon into searing guitar solos and driving beats. Catch him performing songs off his new EP, JPEG RAW Sampler on Wednesday, March 13 at Emo’s.

Tameca Jones – “So Gone”

We’ve been rocking Tameca Jones for the better part of a decade, since she released the red-hot R&B single “Hot and Bothered” back in 2015. Now, she’s back with her first full-length, Plants and Pills, out this February 29th. The first single, “So Gone,” begins with Tameca’s softly emotive vocals, before launching into a full-on pop anthem that showcases her considerable talents as a songwriter and arranger. Catch up on the latest from our February Artist of the Month with Music Editor Jeff McCord’s interview.
