Austin Music We’re Loving – January 2024

Maile Carballo / KUTX

Four new songs from Austin artists that we can’t get enough of.

Alejandro Escovedo – “Bury Me”

Originally written and recorded in the early 90s, “Bury Me” is the first single off Alejandro Escovedo’s upcoming album, Echo Dancing, due out March 29 on Yep Roc Records. Known for hard-hitting punk and rock ‘n’ roll, Alejandro Escovedo used his new project to revisit 14 songs ranging from his first solo album to 2018’s The Crossing. The updated version retains some of the swirling Western atmosphere of the original while stripping away orchestration in favor of Escovedo’s bluesy guitar riffs and crunchy tremolo.

N.O.A – “Ba Li” (feat. CRON!AC)

We first encountered N.O.A. in November of 2023, when Song of the Day producer Jack Anderson featured Israeli-Moroccan singer Noa Belillti’s single “Ba Li.” Now, the track has made it into rotation here at KUTX and Belitti has solidified her presence in the Austin music scene through performances at SXSW with BLK ODYSSY and collaborations with local artists like Iram Reyes. Drawing on her international heritage, “Ba Li” is a globe-trotting club banger à la MIA, with ragga beats and N.O.A.‘s rapid-fire delivery. Catch NOA live at her residency every 4th Wednesday at the Half Step.

Graham Reynolds & Marta Del Grandi – “Linger In Silence”

Austin-based composer Graham Reynolds has a reach far beyond his Central Texas roots. Mark Ronson, music producer for the blockbuster hit Barbie, recently credited Reynolds as an inspiration for the film’s score. When he’s not inspiring icons or heading up his local non-profit Golden Hornet, Reynolds is creating beautiful arrangements with artists like Italian-born singer-songwriter Marta Del Grandi. In English and Italian, “Linger in Silence” is a symphony in four minutes. Strings, steel guitar, and accordion fall in with Reynolds’ percussive piano for an eclectic sonic treat.

Magna Carda – “Temptation”

Name a better local songwriting duo than Magna Carda beatmaker Dougie Do and MC Megz Kelli. We dare you. An early flag bearer for Austin’s emergent hip-hop scene, Magna Carda has been dropping thought-provoking tracks since 2011, joining forces while students at Austin’s St. Edwards University. On “Temptation,” Megz and Dougie team up with Florida-based singer/rapper Jackii Kennedy for a simmering R&B track that wrestles with the pleasure of giving into temptation. The second single off an EP set for release this fall, “Temptation” definitely has us wanting more.
