Matthew Logan Vasquez: “Same”

Austinite Matthew Logan Vasquez‘s decision to go solo from Delta Spirit has been validated yet again. Still performing as a lead vocalist/guitarist but billing under his own name, Vasquez’s debut solo EP, Austin, (released in 2015) captured dark and sarcastic tones across five genre-spanning tracks, before hitting full-throttle with last year’s Solicitor Returns. MLV’s upcoming follow up, Does What He Wants (out April 21), consists of eleven hard-hitting and wide-ranging tracks that instead harbor optimism and positivity in light of life’s struggles.

The first offering from Does What He Wants, “Same” throws Vasquez’s unbridled vocal gruff over an uplifting ’70s-type driving rock beat. It’s complete with backup singer-saturated choruses, ELO-style orchestral riffs, a Heart-evoking synth line, and a raunchy guitar solo, all climaxing towards one of the most satisfyingly abrupt and replay-inducing endings ever.

“Same” appears on Does What He Wants, out April 21.
