Rare Prince Tape Becomes Highest Selling Cassette Sold via Discogs

A rare Prince cassette, previously used as a promotional piece for his 1995 album The Gold Experience, has officially become the most expensive cassette tape sold via the popular music marketplace site Discogs. The cassette tape is officially called The Versace ExperiencePrelude 2 Gold, and contains remixed/edited versions of songs from The Gold Experience as well as other assorted goodies that can’t be heard anywhere else. The cassette was originally given out to attendees of the Versace collection of Paris Fashion Week in 1995, but copies of the cassette have been almost unheard of since. The tape was added to the marketplace in late August of this year and sold for $4,087, making it the most expensive cassette to be sold on the website since a 26-volume Throbbing Gristle box set was sold for $2,200 in October of 2014. ‘Tis the Season for Music Book Releases

As the holiday season creeps onto our radar, thus is the high season for music-themed book releases. On October 1st, Chicago Review Press released Traveling Soul, the first-ever “comprehensive” biography detailing the life of soul titan Curtis Mayfield in a collaboration between Curtis’s son Todd Mayfield and music writer Travis Atria. In November you’ll be able to grab your copy of the long-anticipated memoir Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout co-written by transsexual frontwoman of Against Me! Laura Jane Grace and Noisey editor Dan Ozzi. And today, an extensive chronology of the Sex Pistols comes out in tandem with the 40th anniversary of their debut single “Anarchy in the U.K.” The coffee table book God Save Sex Pistols poses a visual record of the group including handwritten letters, never before seen photographs, and other nifty mementos. If that’s not enough visually archived Sex Pistols for you, there will be deluxe and ultra deluxe editions released of the book later in the month.
